Kinds of Shade Redux - Illustrated

The bottom photo shows a combination of deep shade and partial shade - something that happens in many gardens. That deep shade area gets sun in early spring before the trees have leafed out and many ephemerials grow there quite happily.

High Shade is the kind cast by tall deciduous trees that are either naturally high branched or have been limbed up to 20 feet or so from the ground. Often, a lot of light can penetrate under these so that, in a sheltered garden, many kinds of woodland-type plants will flourish. In an exposed situation, subject to wind, high shade can be more difficult and you may need to use some of the tougher ground covering plants instead of the more delicate woodlanders.

More ornamental grasses for shade next time. See ya' later.
