Adobe or gumbo soils are found in the far west and southwest in the United States, as well as other countries. They are highly alkaline and may contain sufficient nutrients for plant growth, but those nutrients are not readily available to plants because of insufficient rainfall. Caliche, layers of soil cemented together by carbonates of calcium or magnesium, is often found in these areas.
