Online Nurseries - Part 4

     Featured This Week:
  Niche Gardens
and Paul Christian -- Rare Plants

This is the last official article in this series. As time permits, I'll add some more online nursery reviews as extra features, so check back often. If you'd like me to email you when a new one is up, let me know at mtalt@clark.net.

What's That Site Got?
As I surfed, I realized that nursery sites differed widely in the amount and kind of information they provided as well as their ease of use. I began to look for specific features on each site.

Native Plants

If the Niche Gardens web site is indicative of their nursery, it is, indeed, a well run enterprise. Their site does not dazzle or confuse you with bells and whistles; it leads you around in a clear, orderly fashion, always providing you with prominent buttons and links so you can get back to where you were. This is strictly an online version of their print catalog with no links to other sites.

Where they are and what they sell (nursery propagated wildflowers, southeastern natives, perennials, ornamental grasses, trees and shrubs) is the first information you see. They also let you know that their latest catalog is up so you don't waste a lot of time selecting plants, only to find that it's from last year's list. Their address, phone and fax numbers and an email link are at the bottom of every page. If you can't figure out what to do with your garden, take advantage of their garden design services.

They even explain their link buttons! If you're in a hurry and know what you're looking for, select their "List Items" button. It will take you to a search page where you can select a list of plants by letter of the alphabet or a complete list in alphabetical order by botanical name. Each entry links to its catalog entry and has the price next to it as well as a link to their online shopping cart. I wish every online nursery would adopt this feature!

You can also search the entire site by words or phrases -- select their "Search Index" button or, you can immediately browse their online catalog. If you select this link (or the one immediately under their opening picture), you reach a table of contents page, featuring a picture of the print catalog cover and a link for requesting one.
