Clearing Woods - Shrubs Part 4 - Brambles Part 1
The arching canes, which can reach nine feet (2.74 m) in sun and good soil, root where they touch soil. You can see the callus that forms at the tip where it turns 90 degrees to grow vertically and create a new plant. That's really the only thing I hold against this plant - its propensity for trying to cover the earth. It also seeds around quite readily and the innocent looking seedlings come armed with sharp little prickles - so must be pulled with gloves on. If you have a lot of space, this is a bramble you might try in a roughish corner. Wildlife delights in it, both for food and cover, and when backlit by the sun, so do I. Native brambles next time...see ya' later! More Information
