Early Weeds - Part 3 - Page 6

These are the devil and all to pull as seedlings, because of their very tiny size. It's one of the more tedious of gardening tasks. And, yes, I've even tried Round-Up on them and was left with a brown stubble that needed to be cleared away. The Round-Up didn't seem to reduce the seed viability at all - that same area was covered with seedlings again in the spring. These are early, cool weather annuals who dry up and turn brown when the heat hits.

Keep the size of that small one in mind.

Veronica peregrina (possibly) Close-up of Seedpod on Small PlantHere's what makes them so difficult to get rid of. This is a close-up of that seedling sized plant in the previous scan - with a slice of that penny. Look at the left side, just under the terminal bud. That's right...a seed pod on a seedling sized plant. These guys flower early and set seed right away while they are still setting flower buds and growing.

By the time they've put on enough growth to actually grab and pull easily, it's too late.

There are, of course, more weeds in my garden and I'll tell you about them another time. See ya' later!
