Harbingers of Fall - Part V - Asters, Part 3

of Dirt') has a number of articles in the same format on other plants, to see a list, just use the links at the bottom of the page.

  • If you're in to mythology, the first part of Dr. Leonard Perry's article Fall Asters for the Vermont Weathervane talks about the myths associated with asters. In the second part he reviews how to combat some of the cultural problems and gives general information on asters.

  • The 'Focus On Plants' section of the September, 1997 issue of The Garden, the publication of The Royal Horticultural Society, is devoted to Aster novae-angliae and shows a comparison of blooms from fifteen cultivars. If you're a serious gardener, you really need to belong to the RHS, the Grand Daddy of all garden societies with some 200,000 members world-wide. The Garden is worth the membership cost that also entitles you to either free visits to many UK gardens or reduced rates, as well as tickets to Member's Day at the Chelsea Flower Show. Members can consult the society's experts on plant problems and have access to the incredible Lindley Library.

  • The October, 1997 issue of Horticulture magazine has an excellent article on several of the species asters, by Thomas Fischer. The photograph of the foliage of A. lateriflorus 'Lady in Black' has me drooling because I'm a sucker for any purple foliage! If you're not a subscriber, pick up this issue at the news stand or read it in your local library.

There are a couple more 'harbingers of fall' in my garden and I'll tell you about them next time. See ya' later.
