While it will eventually reach eight to ten feet (2.43 -3.04 m), Harry notes that it's an excellent container plant. To give you an idea of the range of form and how large these plants can get in x number of years, I've selected four from the slides Harry sent me and made thumbnails so I can show them side by side. The smaller images link to much larger images that show the leaf form. Use your browser's back button to return to this page.
These two have a spreading form. 'Brandt's Dwarf,' shown in spring foliage, is seven years old and thirty-eight inches (0.96 m) tall, living in a twenty-six inch (0.66 m) pot. It can reach four to five feet (1.21 -1.52 m) in height and keeps its color into the summer, when it turns dark green. Harry says it's a fast growing, spreading shrub that takes pruning if you want to keep it smaller. 'Koto Maru', shown in summer foliage, is three years old, nineteen inches (48.26 cm) tall and living in a nine inch (22.8 cm) diameter pot. This one can reach six to eight feet (2 - 2.43 m) tall, but is good for bonsai. It's a witch's broom with very tiny leaves of light green and pink in spring and unusual rounded lobes.
These illustrate more upright form and very lacy foliage. 'Tama Hime', in summer foliage, is seven years old, twenty-six inches (0.66 m) tall and living in a fourteen inch (35.5 cm) pot. This one will stay short - Harry says under three feet (1 m) - and is also popular for bonsai, which will reduce the tiny leaves to less than half an inch (1 cm). The form is more upright than spreading. 'Villa Taranto', shown in fall color, is eight years old, twenty-eight inches (0.71 m) tall and living in a thirteen inch (33.02 cm) diameter pot. The lacy effect created by the narrow leaf lobes is one that I'm particularly fond of. The spring/summer foliage is dark green with reddish overtones - sounds lovely to me. It can reach six to eight feet (2 - 2.43 m) in height.
