Ivy makes a prodigious root system over time, tough and woody and deeply delving. Digging it out is a real chore. But, if you decide to remove some from a place it's been for some years, it will not return from roots left in the ground once the major stems and leaves have been eliminated....unlike many colonizing plants I can name.
