The Naming Game
Sweet autumn clematis is a vine whose name has been in flux for years and still is, for the most part, although taxonomists seem to finally agree that it is C. terniflora. International Clematis Society's web site has a nice article on this vine that sorts out what it was called and why. I'm so used to it's being C. paniculata, that it takes a real effort to remember it's not anymore.
Whatever the name, I do love my vine (or I should say vines, because if you've got one, you've got more than one), particularly at this time of year when it's a froth of delicately scented bloom. Here it caps two Japanese hollies (Ilex crenata). This one seeds about so readily that I've got them growing up several shrubs and trees, and every year I dig some out to give away or move to more suitable locations. Be warned that the seeds can travel quite a distance on their gossamer parachutes.
