'Pewter Veil' has been around for a while, though a fairly new acquisition for me. Again, new leaves (the smaller one shown) exhibit stronger coloring. With age, the veins take on a soft olive tone while the edge band remains more cinnamon - the whole, in certain lights, having a pinkish cast. This is a rather nice compliment to 'Cappuccino'.
Variations on a Green Theme
H. americana 'Dale's Strain' is another I've had for some years. It has a more silvery sheen in sun than this scan shows. I got my plant from the now (sadly missed) defunct Montrose Nursery. The original plants (according to an old Montrose catalog) were found in the North Carolina mountains by Dale Hendricks who shared seeds with Alan Bush, who must have provided Montrose with their original plant or seeds. Tracing the origins of our garden plants is fascinating! Montrose sold seedlings from their plant, so I imagine that what is in the market is variable, but probably close to the original. I've found this a good garden plant, not needing constant resetting; making large leaves and blooming while tolerating a fair amount of jostling by other plants in the border.
'Mint Julip' is one of the newer green and silver leafed clones - seen here at Philadelphia Flower Show this year. It's on my wish list.
Also on my wish list is Terra Nova's 'Mint Frost' - who ever said green was boring?.
Heuchera americana 'Ring of Fire' is another newbie in my garden, so I have not seen the bright coral edge on the leaves that is supposed to develop with the cold night temperatures of fall, but I will be looking for this. The new foliage is quite different from mature leaves. Both have more of a silver overlay than I could capture in this scan, but you can see that the older the leaves become, the darker grow the veins.
