WE-DU Nurseries in Marion, NC, has been sending plants to gardeners for eighteen years. I think I discovered them around 1989, when the nursery was owned by Dr. Richard Weaver and Rene Duval (hence the WE-DU). When they retired, in 1996, Dennis Niemeyer and Joani Lawarre took over to carry on the tradition of providing us with unusual nursery propagated natives, rare bulbs, bog plants, perennials and woody plants. It's a mouthwatering list with many, many plants that are perfect for all of us shade gardeners. Their website is in the development stages, but you can get a taste of what they offer by checking out their 1998 fall supplement, plus you will find the address for sending for their catalog. Because they are located in the mountains, at an elevation of 1,200 feet (365.76 m), they list many plants hardy to zones 5 or colder, so you northern gardeners will find some suitable for your gardens. They provide cold hardiness zones for most of the plants - some aren't well known enough to have data on them. They say that they do know that most of their plants are hardy to zone 7a and that most of them have been successfully grown in Boston, MA - zone 6. If they are marginally hardy for them, they note this in the description. The catalog gives you all the information you need to order, including the sizes they ship. Plants are listed by botanical name with common names, height, whether it is native and a concise description.
