Before the net, if you ran across a new mailorder nursery that sounded interesting, there were only two ways to find out if they were worth ordering from. Either one of your gardening buddies had experience with them or you just took a chance and sent in your order. Not any more - at least for those of us who garden on and off line. Now, all we have to do is post a question to an email list and we will find out, virtually immediately, whether the nursery is known and what experiences people have had. Plus, the posting of good sources for plants is one of the things email list members are marvelous about.
A post on the Shadegardens List led me to send email to Jack Hirsch, one of the owners of Naylor Creek Nursery in Chimacum, Washington, requesting his list. In a very few days, it arrived. As I read through it, I got more and more excited. A question about the nursery was posted on Perennials List and got at least a half dozen immediate responses - all exceedingly positive. I knew I had to share this one with you all. Anybody with a shady garden has got to see this list! I started a bit of correspondence with Jack Hirsch, who told me they had just put up a web site - even better! (Bob Axmear has done a very nice job with the site - it's easy to navigate and what you need to know is there). He also gave me permission to filch images from his site and sent me to Terra Nova Nurseries for more, as many of the plants he offers are bred or propagated by the renowned Dan Heims who owns that wholesale nursery. Dan, very kindly has given me permission to use some in this article. As of 2/17/99, Naylor now has secure online ordering! Jack and his partner, Gary Lindheimer grow their plants both in raised beds and in containers and cater wholesale to nurseries and garden centers and retail to visitors to the nursery. About four years ago, they added mailorder to the mix, which means that those of us who don't live on the west coast can also take advantage of all the lovely shade plants they have. They also have their own private garden which doubles as a display garden featuring hostas, small fruit trees, ornamental grasses and shade loving plants. I like this play of goldy-greens and foliage shapes, myself. I think the main hosta here is H. 'Guacamole, which forms a large open mound of gold leaves with dark green margins. It's reputably a fast grower that does well in all parts of the country.
