For those of us who garden in the northern hemisphere, fall is here and winter is fast approaching. This being the case, I am (rather hysterically) trying to get the many plants in pots protected for the winter. While some of you may have this little chore sorted to perfection, some of you may be wondering just what to do with all those plants you bought last spring but never got in the ground. Next time, I'll share some methods I've used to hold pots over winter with you. See ya' later.

More Information on Polygonatum

  • There are many species of Polygonatum, many quite similar to each other. Dr. Leonard Perry has a page, developed for one of his classes, listing characteristics of Polygonatum biflorum. Scroll down to the list of related taxa which names, with height and origin other species and provides brief notes on their difference from P. biflorum.

  • Paul Christian carries many species and forms of Polygonatum in his Rare Plant Nursery in the UK. He's got brief descriptions for each one which will give you a idea of the wide variation in form and flower in this genus of "similar" plants.

In case you'd like to see what a few of the other species look like, the following sites have photos of:

  • Manor Nurseries has Polygonatumx hybridum ,

  • PharmaCD - Version 2.0 has a nice one of PharmaCD - Version 2.0 has a nice one of Polygonatum multiflorum showing its clustered flowers.

  • The NC Natural site has Polygonatum biflorum, with text describing it and how the genus got the name Solomon's Seal, plus a bit of information on edible and medicinal uses

  • The TAMU Vascular Plant Image Gallery has Polygonatum odoratum (the green, not variegated leafed one).
  • And, last, but by no means least, Ketzel Levine, the irreverent "Doyenne of Dirt", now has her own web site with, basically, the same Plant Profiles found on Oregon Live's Plant Profile Fieldbook. They're formatted with a photo, then a Primer listing basic information, all followed by an article about her favorite species in the genus. Polygonatum is only one of many Plant Profiles on this site, which flavors very good information with a dollop of sauciness. If you want a chuckle while you're learning - go read!
