Synopsis:
The Vulcans and the Andorians continue their feud, this time fighting over a
class D planet called "Pon Mekhar." Dispute over the territory stretches
back 100 years, and now the Andorians come and occupy the Vulcan colony. An
Andorian commander, Shran, requests that Captain Archer be sent to oversea negotiations
between the Andorians and the Vulcans. It is then up to Archer to convince the
stubborn Vulcan ambassador, Soval, that it is worthwhile to negotiate. When
Archer attempts to deliver Soval to the planet for discussions, one of Shran's
officers, Tarah, betrays him and attempts to destroy the Enterprise
shuttle pod. A struggle for survival ensues and Archer is ultimately able to
expose the betrayal by Tarah and facilitate a cease fire.
The Society Angle:
"Cease Fire" was promoted by UPN rather tackily as "Two nations
at war... a timely Enterprise." I say it is tacky because Star
Trek conveys its message quite well without the viewer having to be told beforehand
what it is about. The depth and intricacy of Star Trek should be beyond the
"ripped-from-the-headlines" mentality of today's television. Beyond
this rather personal opinion, however, is an episode that is overflowing with
commentary about both current and recent conflicts. The "timely" part
of the promo, of course, leads you to expect something tied in to the U.S.-Iraq
