For years the mysterious crop circles that appeared in places like England and India served to fuel the idea that our planet was being visited by aliens. To many this seemed not only to be a legitimate explanation, but the only possible explanation. When it was finally revealed that the designs were a hoax of earthly origin, it appeared that the mystery had been solved. Still, many clung to the idea that aliens really were behind it all. For the majority, however, this was simply proof of what they already knew?aliens were not visiting us to use the earth as their canvas. Crop circles were no longer an issue.

The 2002 release of Signs therefore seemed to be an idea whose time had passed. With most people accepting that the elaborate designs were just a prank, could M. Night Shyamalan really hope to pull off a film whose plot revolved around the idea that aliens were littering Earth's corn fields with interstellar graffiti? Is there really anything interesting and new to be examined?
