Deus X (Book Review)

On a slightly different note, the title of the book is really quite clever. When I first saw it, I thought it must be the name of some future pope who would appear in the book. But the head of the church in the book is Pope Mary I, so that idea was quickly abandoned. As I continued to read, I couldn’t figure out what the title had to do with the story. Later, near the end, I realized its significance. ‘Deus?Eis the Middle English word for ‘God,?Eand the ‘X?Eis actually a little joke. It comes from the Latin term deus ex machina.

Generally speaking, deus ex machina is an unexpected, artificial, or improbable character who enters a work of fiction to untangle a plot or resolve a situation. In Greek and Roman drama, the term was used for a god lowered by stage machinery to resolve a plot or extricate the protagonist from a difficult situation. When the successor entity of Father Pierre De Leone undergoes a transformation in the latter part of this short novel, it certainly fits this definition well.

If this book sounds interesting to you and you’d like to check it out, you may have to do a little looking around to find it. It was published in 1993, but it’s out-of-print at the moment. I picked it up at a bookstore here in Japan, so I’m sure you can find it back in North America, England, or Oz if you drop by a few shops with good selections.

So if you’re interested in a true sci-fi exploration of a very touchy issue, check out Deus X and find out why Spinrad is a great writer.
