STATE OF THE ART Part II

I routinely get requests to revisit webzines and re-rate them. Also, while looking for promising webzines, I will EMail a webzine to let them know that there are too many broken links or that they don't appear to be an open market, but that if their conditions change, I'd be glad to revisit them.

So as a follow-up to my State of the Art Article (September 30, 2001) http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/4973... I decided to take a trip around the webzines I reviewed in 1999 when I started writing this column.

Boy was I surprised when I visited E-SCAPE .

I clicked on the URL I had published in the article and voila, I was transported to one of those sites which won't stop bombarding the screen with pop-up windows. Pop-up windows which nauseate rather that excite. Yep. It's an abandoned address which has been taken over by squatters, porn-squatters in this case.

NOTE: I have removed the offending URL, so no need to go looking for it (not that you would!)

I found this note on the Speculations Website www.speculations.com
Message #154 left by Lida on Mar 2, 2000 at 8:59: Just saw this in theINKLINGS newsletter. 2) According to J. Patrick McDonald, publisher: E-scape: The Digital Journal of Speculative Fiction is no longer accepting submissions. "We will post one final issue and then go on extended, perhaps permanent, hiatus."

The next webzine is the one I have always enjoyed most. The amazing Eternity Webzine , created and run by the amazing Steve Algieri. Mr. Algieri has been a tireless and devoted proponent of small press, webzines and new authors and artists for a long time.

As reported in http://www.mamohanraj.com/Writing/sfmark... Eternity Online: Editor, Steve Algieri. Steve did Pulp Eternity (print semi-pro) and had planned a major online prozine; he had serious health problems and was forced to suspend operations.

I'm not sure how Steve is doing these days. I wish him all good things.

So this is seriously depressing.

Perhaps, with the state of the world as it is, I should be trying to bring you happy little articles. And maybe I'll do just that next month, in celebration of the new year.

But right now I'm putting out a call for people to send me URLs for SF/F webzines. I'd love to hear from anyone who has found a wonderful new zine. Meanwhile, I'll continue to revisit the webzines I've reported on in the past and see how they're faring.
