“Today,” writes Jake Hamilton in Special Effects in Film and Television, “there are not as many matte painters because it is possible to create backgrounds digitally with a computer...[but] many directors believe that paintings provide more detail and, sometimes, greater flexibility.”

In our next article, we’ll move into the computer age and discuss latest techniques for creating worlds that never were.
