As for the performances, they are nothing less than superb. Huston is the perfect priestess of a dying faith, determined to save her people and prepared to sacrifice anyone and everyone to do it. Margulies' Morgan is the woman torn between the pain of seeing her way of life passing away and her rage at having been manipulated as a pawn to save it. As Morgaine, Morgan's aunt, Joan Allen is a viper driven mad by greed and ambition, condemning the methods of her sister, Viviane, all the while she is ironically using those same methods to further her own goals.

Director Ulrich Edel (Body of Evidence) is a veteran of TV movies who keeps a steady hand on the helm, moving the action to crescendo then letting it sink slowly back a bit for respite before driving forward again to even greater levels of emotion and confrontation. As with any such production, much of Ms. Bradley's story has to fall by the wayside, but both Mr. Edel and screenwriter Gavin Scott (Small Soldiers, The Borrowers) have done what all good novel adaptations should do--maintained the spirit of the tale they are re-creating.

It's a given that TNT, having spent a goodly amount of cash to bring this production to fruition, will eventually be sending it out on video. You'll probably be able to borrow a home-brewed copy from one of your friends long before than. Whatever you do, however, don't miss this marvelous film experience.
