Metropolis, Pt. 1: "Between the mind and the hands...."

Maria standing before the altar, and he falls to his knees as he stares at her. She tells the story of the Tower of Babel, how it is conceived by a group of architects as a symbol of the greatness of civilization.

"Great is the world and its Creator," they boast. "Great is Man."

Hundreds of thousands of workers are set to building the great tower, but they know nothing of the architects dreams. Nor to the designers care that those who labor to build die from exhaustion as they toil. Eventually, the workers grow angry and revolt, and the mighty tower is reduced to rubble, the dream destroyed.

"Between the mind and the hands, there must be a mediator," she tells them. "The heart must be the mediator."

As the workers join Maria in prayer, one asks Maria who their mediator will be.

"He will surely come," she tells them, and Freder realizes that he is the only one with the power to be that mediator.
