DIRECTORS VIE FOR A CHANCE AT SPIDEY
After all the fuss and feathers, it appears that Sony is finally getting the Spiderman feature film project this up and
running. They have actually gotten as far as starting to interview potential directors. Daily Variety reports that Fight
Clubs David Fincher and the ever-bizarre Tim Burton are the preferred choices and that Chris Columbus is also in the
running.
And speaking of Marvel-movies, the there will be another little wait before we can see the long-awaited X-Men.
Fox's now saying the film will not be released until at least the July 14th weekend. Even more disappointing for fans,
the trailer that was scheduled to appear the weekend that Bicentennial Man opens will have to wait a little while
longer.
WHERE'S MY MUMMY?
Those of you who, like me, thought The Mummy may have been the comedy hit of the year will be delighted to learn
that a sequel is in progress. Variety's Michael Fleming client that John Hannah has already signed to reprise his role
of Jonathan Carnahan. There is no word yet as to whether the giant flesh-eating scarab beetles will also be free to
participate.
LORD OF THE RINGS STUFF
Not to be outdone by George Lucas when it comes to pre-release marketing, New Line Cinema is already starting the pre-Lord Of The Rings Fight they
announced that the DVD version of The Astronaut's Wife will include a Lord Of The Rings Internet browser. New
Line expects to offer a number of goodies on upcoming DVD releases including video commentary from director
Peter Jackson, interviews with cast and crew, and set photos. The Astronauts Wife, which starred Johnny Depp as an astronaut who turns very bizarre (type-cast again!) after a trip into space, is
scheduled for release February 8th.
For those of you who aren't regular visitors to the LOTR Web sites, filming on the move the seems to be
proceeding smoothly despite some early glitches. Putting an end to all the gossip and rumor, New Line announced
that Cate Blanchett would take the role of Galadriel. At the same time, the film's honchos have to go looking for a
new Strider when Stuart Townsend bowed out one week into principal photography. Townsend was replaced by
Viggo Mortensen.
And we won't even talk about the New Zealand Army's going AWOL.
GILLIAM TO SCRIPT, DIRECT GOOD OMENS
Speaking of matches made in heaven, Terry Gilliam has received the nod to adapt and direct Good Omens, the
hilarious take on the Apocalypse by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Crossed fingers and rituals for a positive
