Shooting on the long-delayed and (for Marvel fans, anyway) much-anticipated Bryan Singer film is scheduled to begin in September.

Godzilla is alive and on video in the US!

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Rebirth of Mothra, and Rebirth of Mothra II will be available for purchase on video beginning August 3, released by Columbia TriStar Home Video for the first time in North America. The first features a battle between the old Monster and a nuclear-powered, diamond-shielded replica invented as a Godzilla-exterminator. The giant bug takes on a three-headed critter named Desghidorah in the first "Rebirth" flick and an animated garbage disposal named Degehra in the second.

In other news...

Warner Home Video, pretending once again that it is family-oriented, announced that The Matrix will not be released in home video format and will be available on VHS only as a rental. It is speculated that the decision may have arisen because the sinister "agents" in the film wear black leather dusters similar to the ones worn by the shooters in the Columbine High School killing spree. The much-praised virtual reality film will be released for rental and on DVD on October 5. DVD, say the WB pundits, appeals more to a mature audience. And I have some lovely Florida real estate available cheap for those of you who agree with that.

To give Bubba-u-B credit, they have also released a definitive Stanley Kubrick collection on VHS and DVD. The collection lists for $149.95 and is available at all of the online discount sites for about one-third off. The nine titles include Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and A Clockwork Orange. Apparently, teen violence is only bad if it happens in VR. Either that, or nobody at WB ever saw Orange.

Silva Screen Records is developing a two-CD music collection of John Williams sound tracks. To be titled Close Encounters: The Essential John Williams Film Music Collection, the disks will include tracks from Close Encounters, Star Wars, and other Williams masterpieces.

The latest rumors have it that Leonardo DiCaprio has nixed the idea of playing grown-up Anakin in the last two Star Wars episodes on the grounds he wasn't impressed with the quality of Episode One and the script for Episode Two was even worse. Too bad Peter Jackson already has Elijah Wood sewn up.

That's it for now....
