In a July 8 article, the Hollywood Reporter quoted Jackson as saying Wood "...has an enormous natural ability to draw an audience into a story and the dramatic depth to hold them there."
"While we looked at many good actors, it was clear from the moment we met Elijah that we had found Frodo Baggins," Jackson told HR's Zorianna Kit.
For a young man who just saw his 18th birthday six months ago, Wood has chalked up an impressive filmography, one that demonstrates the broad range of his talent. His first major role was that of Michael Kaye in Avalon opposite such high-powered artists as Aidan Quinn and Joan Plowright. His next major role was in Mel Gibson's time-travel romance, Forever Young, followed by the definitive part of Mike in Radio Flyer. His most recent forays were in Deep Impact and , both recently moved to video.
His next appearances will be in Martin Duffy's The Bumblebee Flies Anyway and James Toback's Black and White. Shooting on The Fellowship of the Rings, the first episode of the trilogy, is slated to begin in October in New Zealand.
Arnold revives The Man of Bronze
Arnold Schwarzenegger may have found a role even more suited to him than The Terminator.
Daily Variety reported on July 7 that Schwarzenegger is planning a remake of Doc Savage: Man of Bronze, based on the pulp character created in the 1930's by Lester Dent. For the unenlightened, Dr. Clark "Doc" Savage Jr. is a millionaire philanthropist who fights for truth, justice and the American way with the help of a motley collection of fellow do-gooders. Raised from birth according to a program established by his father, he has super-developed physical and mental skills and sports a tan even George Hamilton would kill for - hence his title.
Dent's character was taken to the silver screen in 1975 in a high-camp fun version directed by The Martian Chronicles' Michael Anderson and starring former Tarzan Ron Ely. That script was done by Joe Morhaim and the inestimable George Pal. No word yet on whether Arnold plans to use the original or have a new one done.
