Make the Necessary Changes

Although you have purchased your pattern in the size and type that is correct for you, you may have to make certain changes in order to ensure a more perfect fit.

Before you buy your pattern, you should take some measuements namely your bust, waist, hip, and the length of the back waist. You now want to measure your front waist lenghth, chest, shoulder seam, back width, sleeve girth, sleeve length to elbow, sleeve length to wrist, and skirt length.

Take these other measurements from seam to seam on the pattern after you have pinned any darts, pleats, or tucks. Compare the pattern measurements with your own and then make note of any differences. This will clearly point out which areas may need adjustment.

Don't forget about the allowance for movement in your clothes, commonly referred to as "ease". Typically the bust ease is 3-5", hip ease is 3", and back waist ease is 1/4 to 3/8".
