Have You Got the Notions?When you buy your pattern and have selected your fabric, before you leave the sewing store, check the items under "notions" on the back of the pattern. Thes items play an important role in the look and fit of your garment. Select them with care and buy everything you need at one time so that you can match everything and be able to complete the garment once you start. Here are some helpful pointers on some common notions: Thread: It should match your fabric. Select it one shade darker, because thread sews in lighter. Zipper: The length and type of zipper required is listed for you. Select the one that is nearest to the color of your fabric. Buttons: The number and size of buttons recommended is listed on the pattern envelope. The type should be in keeping with the design of the garment and the type of fabric selected. Self-cover buttons are available to make matching them with the fabric a cinch. Elastic: Available in varying widths and types depending on their use. Waistband elastic is stronger and less likely to fold over. Boning: Used as a support usually in strapless tops and dresses. Buy the width and length listed on the pattern envelope. Horsehair Braid: Used to add support to the hem of full skirts (especially wedding or evening gowns). It is available in various widths. Bias seam tape or binding: Used for finishing curved edges and for trimming. Available in single or double fold.
