1) start small If you look at your sewing room as one hugely cluttered and disorganized area to clean you will soon get discouraged and abandon the task. Start small with one little section of the room. For example, go directly to your sewing desk and clean it up. Do not divert your attention to other areas. Stay focused and do little chores at a time. Eventually all the little things will add up to one whole clean room.
2)remember why you bought it When you see fabric pieces or other items that you bought last summer (or even later), try to remember exactly what project you bought this for. If the project has now become obsolete then the item should too. If you just can't bear the thought of throwing it away, make a quilt top with fabric pieces or start a bag of scraps to give to a friend who does make quilts.
3) Refresh yourself on what you do have When you get in a buying mood at the fabric store and later on the project you bought stuff for doesn't happen, we tend to forget what we bought and what we have on hand for the next project. By going through your sewing room and cleaning it out at least each spring, you can remind yourself exactly what you do have on hand and avoid buying things twice which will save you money.
4) Stowaways Do get some nice plastic (see-through) containers for your fabric pieces. It keeps them dust free plus you can see at a glance some of the colors and prints you have on hand.
Until next time, happy cleaning!
