Seventh-day Adventism's Foundation - The Holy Bible

Many beliefs and doctrines make up what is called the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They are all important and worthy of study. However, the thing that forms the unshakeable foundation of this denomination is the Bible itself. Seventh-day Adventists believe the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, exclusive of the Apocrypha, to be the written Word of God. We believe the human hands of men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit wrote it. These Scriptures, as the inspired Word of God, are infallible and provide the road map to salvation as we are led to understanding through the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Biblical Verification

There are eight specific Scriptures that provide the biblical basis for this, the First Fundamental Belief of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Quotations are from the New International Version.

2 Peter 1:20, 21, "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

2 Timothy 3:16, 17, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Psalm 119:105, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path."

Proverbs 30:5, 6, "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

Isaiah 8:20, "To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn."

John 17:17, "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."

1 Thessalonians 2:13, "And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe."

Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

Comparison with Other Denominations

The Bible forms the basis for many denominations. The Baptist, Church of God, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Messianic Jewish denominations all share the belief with Seventh-day Adventists that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the guidebook for our salvation. Here are the resource links for each of these denominations that give the complete statement of their belief about the Bible.
