Do we announce ourselves or not?

© Jewl Ann Wall

There is a great debate with service dog owners now days. Do you call ahead and let Restaurants, Stores, Hotels, Concert Halls Etc and let them know you are coming with your service dog or just show up because you know you are allowed. The ADA say's we are allowed everywhere.

As I said it is a great debate, one I think that will never be settled. Since service dogs are being used for so much more now days. They are being used for things like Hearing, Seizure alert, Emotional support, PTSD, Bipolar and Helping in dropped objects. It is up to the owner on how they feel.

Some feel that it is no ones business to know a head of time. No regular shopper calls and says, "I'm coming in to shop". So Why should we. Others don't like confrontation for many reasons and would rather not be stopped at the door and and made a spectacle out of.

It helps in other ways to call a head.

1. If you are flying, it is always good to call and let them know you have a service dog so you can get Bulkhead seating.

2. Hotels, Concert Halls is another place some like to call. Just so they know that a dog is coming.

3. Some people even tell the taxi company up front and let them know that they are bringing their service dog.

There are people who say that it is our given right to go anywhere we want and that we do not have to announce ourselves.

I would like to a start a discussion on this.

I want to see how others feel on this subject.

I would like to see how you handle this from day to day.

Places you do call and places you don't call.

I would like to see which side of the subject fence or you on.

Talk to you soon.
