The McLaughlin Chronicles: An Officer and a Gentleman

McLaughlin first took a look around the entire ground, made some notes on how the defenses were set up and how he would want them changed. Overall, he would have to say that Gates wasn't all that bad as far as making sure that the platoon was protected. There were claymore mines all over the place, bamboo spike emplacements and several machine gun nests. In fact, McLaughlin wondered where Gates got the extra M60s, he knew he had one with each patrol that was sent out. There were several others around. 'Gates must have nicked them from some place,' McLaughlin thought. He didn't mind all that much though. It showed Gates' compassion for his men's well being.

McLaughlin then went over and watched as Corporal Newmark supervised the handling of the KIA. The man looked like he handled himself pretty well, just as Sergeant Anderson had indicated. He didn't say anything, but saluted as the truck drove away. He waited for a bit and just looked at the dust that was spinning around, in wake of the truck that just drove away. He returned Corporal Newmark's salute as he left for his other duties. He then just stood there and pondered. He wondered what his next move was going to be as the commanding officer of this platoon.

So far, with the slight exception of Gates' personality, McLaughlin liked everything that he say. The men seemed to be in good spirits and well suited to take the challenges that lay before them. OR, at least as well as any other similar unit would be able to. He stood there and pondered. After coming out with nothing, he then decided to check on inventory, knowing that the more he knew that he had, the more he would be able to decide what to do with it. He was able to scare Gates a little bit, a while ago. If he was going to keep him on his toes, he would have to do his homework. By the time the patrols came back, McLaughlin had everything he needed to counter Gates and a plan that would surprise even him.

Gates came back, with his patrol, well after the other one did, and, like the other one, his patrol came back without incident. McLaughlin didn't say much to them as they came back. He figured that they would listen too hard to him, anyway. He wouldn't blame them, if he were in their position, he probably wouldn't listen too well either. Gates barely even looked at him. McLaughlin didn't mind, he was going to sock it to them all that night.
