Thompson stepped out of his apartment, after kissing his wife goodbye. Like McLaughlin, he was early too, but he was used to an earlier shift. Besides, getting in a few minutes early wouldn’t hurt, right? There was the snarl of an animal and the rapid movement of bodies. Jen let out a scream, but she was hopelessly pinned against a wall. A brave and ill-prepared hero grabbed the attacker from behind and managed to pull the human-turned-animal away from his intended victim. Though, this only served to delay the inevitable and turn the hero into the first victim. “Somebody help!” Jen screamed, in bloody terror as she tried crawled away. But like many of the designed unusual noises, this went over as normal in the city that never sleeps. The only one who did respond to it was McLaughlin. He wasn’t all that far away and his ears were sensitive for such a noise. He ran off in the direction of it. The attacker, finished with stopping the hero now turned towards his victim. Jen scrambled and got to her feet. She didn’t make it all that far before the attacker jumped her from behind. She did, however, managed to get to the small canister of mace that she always carried in her purse, out. She aimed it behind her and pushed the trigger. The attacker let out a hideous scream and fell from her back. She got back on to her feet and continued to run. The attacker took three seconds to recover, and then he was back on his feet and running again. McLaughlin arrived at the other end of the building just in time to see the attacker disappear around the corner. He was torn. He saw a victim, but he also wanted to stop the attacker. “Hell,” he said, moving quickly to the body. He rolled it over and was surprised. It was the man in the dark clothing. ‘He didn’t look like a man of little means,’ he thought. He quickly searched the pockets and found a wallet. He opened it and saw the badge immediately. He swore out loud and threw it aside. McLaughlin looked at the side of the man’s neck, where it was bleeding. He wiped away some of the blood and saw two teeth marks. Far from surprised, he reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out an injection kit and opened it. Inside, there were two needles and a series of fluid containers. He quickly set up a needle and injected the man with it. He doubted that there was much venom in the wound. It didn’t look like the attacker had taken too much blood, as if he/she was distracted or had a better victim. He heard Jen scream again as he packed the kit up. He ran off after Jen.
