Machines. Do we like them, or not? My initial answer to this question would be a resounding NO - and I'd probably add that we were better off without them. But once I think about it a little, I do realise there are a few machines I am not yet prepared to live without and would have to admit they make my degree of self reliance a little easier.
My bread maker is a good example. I would never have bought one of these, always preferring to do it the old fashioned way. That said though, I'm not terribly consistent and because of the time and trouble bread can be when making it by hand I would more often than not leave it till the next day....or the next. I was given the bread maker as a housewarming gift when we moved here and I have to say now that I love it. I use organic, stoneground flour and it makes the most delightful light textured wholemeal bread - and it takes me only minutes to get it ready. SO, I would have to conclude that if it wasn't for the bread maker I wouldn't have fresh, healthy bread every day and my husband would likely resort to buying the rubbish from the shop. The other day I purchased an ice cream churn. Again, I am not normally into these fangled machines that do everything for us, but it was reduced so much in price I figured it would be worthwhile. The reason? Well, my children love ice cream - but have you seen what is in the ice cream you buy at the supermarket? It's pure poison. I am not into us having a lot of dairy, but if ice cream is going to be served around here I figure it's best to know what's in it. This way I can stick to fresh fruit to flavour it and play around with different types of milk (our cow just had a calf and I am considering milking her for our dairy needs soon - the problem being I don't want as much dairy here as she'll provide!). I wrote recently about keeping the fridge - I go through these moral dilemma's with regards to modern life. I have utilised the fridge and freezer more now and made it work for us, therefore justifying it's existence. Having the freezer filled with pre-cooked meals and snacks makes life much easier and is certainly more thrifty when buying produce, or when you have a glut of vegetables in the garden.
