Are you a Wage Slave?

I have said before that the system cannot hurt you if you do not rely on it. Realistically, most of us do rely on the system to some degree, however small but the less we need it, the less power it has. The same applies to money - the less money we need, the more powerful we are. If we are not in desperate need of something, it cannot affect us by being taken away. While we continually depend on large amounts of money for our very comfort and entertainment, we will continue to be wage slaves.

If you like to eat strawberries, grow them. Don't go to work doing something you dislike to earn the money to buy the strawberries that have sat on a truck for a week, been sprayed with harmful chemicals by someone else doing a job they dislike on a plantation run purely by profit and the demands of mass consumerism...see what I mean? Something as simple as strawberries and with the wrong attitude we can globally ruin the human spirit.

So, look around you and decide - how much is enough? How much money do you really need? Are there changes that can be made that will enable you to escape the monotony of daily work outside the home? It's worth a thought, surely.

There is a website you may like to check out, it's called C.L.A.W.S - Creating Liveable Alternatives to Wage Slavery. You can find it here: http://www.whywork.org/ This site is all about re-thinking the work ethic, and putting in place plans and strategies for a new world. I'd love to hear your views on this line of thinking.

In my next article I will explore the philosophy behind intentional communities; their goals, objectives and outcomes. These communities pretty much tie in well with self reliance and the work myth, but for now - think about that job. Think about how much you like it compared to how much you need it. Maybe it's time for a change?
