It Happens to All of Us

MY WAY AROUND IT

There's nothing you can do about author's errors except make the correction and pay the price. I must caution you though. There is a difference between blatant, unacceptable, and unbearable changes and ones that can wait until the next edition. Author's alterations (A.As) can be very expensive, so if you find mistakes during your review of the proof, you will need to decide which ones you can live with (for now) and which ones will keep you awake at night (and need to be changed). The misspelling of the word "Introduction" was not something I could leave for the next edition. I made the change and paid the price...

Things are cruising along and the printer says that he'll have my book done by the 4th of October. I'm excited now! Well, today is October 4th and I get the call. Talk about anxiety being at an all-time high. The "guts" of the book were all printed and collated and the book and covers were ready to be bound together.

GLITCH #3

The cover had been designed to fit an 8.5" x 11" book and the book is an 8" x 10" trim size. I called my cover designer and he confirmed that it was designed as an 8.5" x 11" cover from the beginning. The printer sends me a new quote for how much the "correction" would be if we redesign it correctly as an 8" x 10" cover. Meanwhile I have my books printed, collated and ready to be bound, but the cover doesn't fit.

MY WAY AROUND IT

I'm still working on this one!
