Still, there is no guarantee that you can master these basic walking meditation exercises if you diligently do the exercises. What matter most in Tai Chi practice is a core value of humility. As quoted from my article in T'ai Chi International Magazine (vol.23, no.5) page 43, "A student, who starts practicing T'ai Chi with a humble knowledge that he or she is not a quick learning student, is usually more successful. The selfless attitude, which recognizes that it requires studious repetition to master the meticulous details, is the key to real mastery." Be ready to become "foolish" with Tai Chi. Let that ego go. Fuse your mind and soul into the breathing exercise. Stay intuitive and don't look back. Leave your competitive self behind. If this sounds too intimidating to you, well, you might need to find some other time. Anyway, if you are ready to leave all those stress behind, it is time for you to start practicing Tai Chi Chuan and its renowned "walking meditation." I always reiterate to myself, that even though Tai Chi Chuan teaches non-competition and intuition over logic, the practice really improves my endurance to compete with others. With refreshed and healthy mind and soul, I'm ready to be as competitive as needed. However, the competition has changed. Tai Chi changes the way I perceived competition and the competitors. Tai Chi Chuan has literally changed my personality in a very positive way. With elevated level of endurance, I'm now able to withstand stressful situations more gracefully. I don't see competitors as adversaries anymore. Rather, I see them as special people that I can embrace with gracefulness and elegance. I believe that through graceful interaction, where the "pushed" party pushes back, the energy doesn't harm. It embraces. As long as we treat our competitors the way we want ourselves to be treated, positive energy circles around us. Eventually, it returns to our chi. When things don't turn out fine (it happens all the time, though), the positive energy is there to protect us from harm. We've done our best. Therefore, whatever follows is what we deserve. Be it something positive immediately from the beginning or something that will turn into positive energy over time.
