Internet, My Ticket to Self-Empowerment© Jennie S. Bev
My Humble Beginnings
I am not a person with high technology literacy, but now I cannot live without technology. Most of the things I do involve some level of technological advancement and most of the things I own and use are designed and manufactured by corporations that adopt state-of-the-art technology. If we pay close attention to everything around us, we'll notice that the society we live in owes its advancement primarily to technology. From the crop we have for dinner, the convenience of our kitchen, the comfort of our living room, the real-time features of telephony and the medical laboratory equipment to help physicians diagnose when we are ill. To me, technology is more than a friend. It is my most important self-empowerment tool. Let's start with the overlooked low-tech things we all possess and use everyday without realizing them as products of mankind's technological advancement. The wooden chair that I'm sitting in, for example, is designed and manufactured with computerized technology and machinery. My digital alarm clock is the only friend who wakes me up in the morning with style playing my favorite Beatles' hits. Despite its cute round look and large blinking numbers on the screen, it is actually one of the earliest digital technologies. Without it, I believe, waking up in the morning won't feel the same. Waking up is the most important moment in a day, isn't it? Without a good wake, there won't be a good work. Of all, my PC (personal computer) is probably the most important recent technology that makes my life a lot easier and so meaningful. The Internet technology enables me to communicate real-time with clients, co-workers, friends and families thousands of miles away. It gives a place to grow in multiple directions. It teaches how to flourish an endless interest to locate the hidden gold mines. Above all, it gives me a reason to seek my fortune in a new land, the virtual land. Carrying a Compaq Presario 1200 and a Web-enabled cellular phone anywhere I go while keep working full-time might sound a bit eerie in the early 1990s. But now, it's simply a part of life. Above all, it is a part of my frugal and far-from-glamour lifestyle. I owe my desktop PC, laptop and portable Internet access to send me off to a higher level of independence, where self-empowerment is a very natural word. These hi-tech goodies are literally my tools to achieve financial, emotional and psychological independence at the time when I needed it the most.
