When the World Turns Its Back on Me

Mar 21, 2001 - © Jennie S. Bev

"If I have lost confidence in myself, I have the universe against me." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

When the world turns its back on me, I know that I need to keep moving. But it is not always that easy. It takes a lot of courage, a lot of understanding. Above all, it takes the courage to understand myself. In the end, I usually realize that the world didn't turn its back on me. It was I who failed to see the glimpse of sunray that was temporarily covered in the clouds.

The world is a mystery. How it works is quite astonishing actually. We all learn from our own feelings, experiences and happenings through our senses. It gives us happiness, misery, sense of value and, many times, sense of no value. But if we are brave enough to watch ourselves closely, we'll realize that our life is a masterpiece painted in a studio chamber named "the world." What we include on the canvas of life and in the studio chamber are completely up to us.

We can design and color it with the most precious virtues of all, or no virtue at all. We can make the painting a surrealist, an abstract, an impressionist or a realist. We are the painter of our life, thus anything the masterpiece reflects is actually what we made it to.

Being the painter of life doesn't mean that we have the power to control where the world leads us, though. Being the painter doesn't mean that we have the power to control what we can become or over what we wish to feel and experience. It is all about making the journey more pleasant, but not the destination.

Nobody wants to end up in an unfamiliar territory, but we have no power over where we will end up. As a painter, we can create a very beautiful journey and thousands of poetries. Yet, we can't drive the vessel of life alone.

There are things that we must control. There are things that we can control. Yet, some things are better left untouched and let the Higher Power takes over. Thus, the wisdom to know the difference is the key to seek the hidden sunray behind the clouds.

Let's face this fact: life involves taking a lot of chances and experiencing failures. We need to realize that no matter where life is sending us to, we are enjoying every minute of the journey and are deemed proactive to make it even more enjoyable.
