Partial seizures arise from a burst of electrical activity which is restricted to only one area of the brain. This may also be reffered to as Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.
Partial seizures are divided into two groups.Simple partial seizures and complex partial seizures. A simple partial is distinguished by the characteristics of remaining fully conscience and the ability to remember the episode. Simple partial seizures cause a very diverse amount of symptoms. This makes proper diagnosis difficult. It mimics other conditions such as migranes, abdominal problems and psychological disorders. There are four categories which simple partial epilepsy is divided into. These are motor seizures, sensory seizures, psycic seizures and autonomic seizures. I will cover these in as much detail possible over the next few articles. Autonomic Seizures: These cause changes in the part of the brain which controls the nervous system influencing bodily functions. These seizures are located in the limbic system of the brain. They are often not picked up on an eeg due to the fact they are located so deep in the brain tissue. These types of partial seizures cause sensations of unpleasantness, usually starting in the stomache or chest. Such symptoms such as sweating or chills may also accompany this type of seizure. Breathing and heart rate are also influenced during a seizure. These factors very often will result in a mis-diagnosis of anxiety or panic attacks. Motor Seizures: These seizures effect the cordination and control of the parts of the body which regulate movement. These differ from tonic clonic seizures as they usually only effect a portion of the body and conscienceness is not lost. Some of the symptoms involving this seizure type is muscles may jerk on only one side of the body for example a finger or arm may jerk. These movements are restricted to only one side but may spread to adjoining muscles. There is usually a weakness involved with this type, if more muscles are involved. One side of the body such as the arms and legs may feel as if they are unable to move. Often a tingling sensation is described in these limbs. In some cases even the ability speak may be affected. The next article will cover psycic seizures and sensory seizures. If you have any questions please e-mail me I will be happy to find the answer for you. Go To Page: 1
