Seizure Alert Dogs: The Story of Tagert and Jewl

© Lina Jo Gilliland

Just recently I met a woman named Jewl and her dog Tagert through my epilepsy board. It just so happened that not only did she have a seizure alert dog but also worked at Sheppy's Disabilty Dogs Inc.

I have had many people ask about such dogs so here is their story.

Sheppy's Disability Dogs Inc. was established in 1985 and was one of the first providers of such dogs. The owners of Sheppy's started to train these types of dogs after they began to notice that their family dog had started to react to their child's seizures. Each dog goes through an extensive screening process for any behavioral problems. Approximately 200 hours of training are required before they are released.

Training takes between six and seven months and the dog learns forty training comands. When done, the dog receives three awards. Mandatory service level one, mandatory obedience one, and good canine citizenship. Each dog is neutered or spayed and has a microchip inserted in their shoulder. These dogs cost upwards of $4,000. The dogs are able to sense seizures because the body odor changes prior to one happening. In Jewl's case, her dog herds her into a safe place and at times actually lies on her lap to prevent her from walking around.

Tagert is a black labrador retriever who came to live with Jewl in 1998. Only she can put it best when she says "Tagert gave me back mobility, independence, dignity and an appreciation for things in life that I used to take for granted."
