Living With Seizure Disorders: An Overview

© Lina Jo Gilliland

Until just recently, seizure disorders were rarely talked about. This is true even in today's society. It affects one out of every two-hundred people and there are more than 40 different types of seizure disorders. Seizure disorders have many different causes and in more than 60% of these cases the cause is unknown.

For most people to be diagnosed with a seizure disorder is a frightening and a serious thing. Living with a seizure disorder is a terrifying and challenging experience. Certain types of seizures often cause people to be misdiagnosed as having a disorder of a psychiatric nature. Many people spend years on medications and in institutions because of inexperienced doctors who fail to recognize the signs.

Due to the way society perceives this disorder many people feel a lack of support and understanding from the world. On a personal note, I believe this to be true. I was labeled as mentally unstable by my superiors at work and asked to resign due to my seizures.

In the articles to follow I will explore the various types of disorders. Also, new medications, procedures and personal stories of people living with this disorder will be included. I hope that you will not only gain knowledge but also find support and compassion. Also if you know of an outstanding doctor or medical facility please let me know so I may pass it along to my readers,

Lina
