Focus on: PlayStation 2

Welcome back all. Sorry for the delayed article but my normal update day (Thursday) was Thanksgiving Day here in the U.S. so the day was spent with friends and family. I hope and trust that all of you here did the same, and now, onto the last system – Sony’s PlayStation 2.

NFL 2K2 – This is basically a beefed up version of the Dreamcast version. This does mark the first of the big showdown between EA and Sega with Madden going toe-to-toe with Sega’s prized gridiron title. The rivalry between the two developing giants will be just the beginning of what will be one of the biggest contests between companies, ever. EA has already made offhand remarks about Sega not being a massive influence or danger as a third-party developer, but with the 2K sports line doing so well, they might just wish they hadn’t made the comment. There is no online play for this title though and it was just recently released.

NBA 2K2 – Much like NFL2K2 this title will go head-to-head with one of EA Software’s most prized franchise, NBA Live. This is pretty much an enhanced Dreamcast port with no net play and it should be out relatively soon.

Rez – This is a unique little title that is being brought to the PlayStation 2 by the creators of Space Channel 5 (ugh) and Sega Rally (yay!). This is an odd title in that it features wire-frame graphics that is played with the backdrop of ‘techno’-ish music by supposedly popular DJs. The story is weak, one of the typical “there is a virus, go clean it out of the network” deals, it doesn’t look particularly interesting, but I am a huge fan of Sega Rally so I’ll give this one a whirl. This title will be out in January of 2002.

Virtua Fighter 4 – That’s right, the big cahoona! I bought a PlayStation 2 just for this beast and it seems as though that was a wise choice. There has already been a character edit mode confirmed along with several other features. From what was shown at a recent Tokyo Game Show, it had the crowds impressed and seemed to be coming along very well. There is word that it will be out in Japan in January-February and it could be on our shores as early as March! All of the impressions I have read have stated that they were all surprised at just how well the port was coming along and how close to the arcade version the title was already appearing (and sounding .. and playing..and, well, you get the idea). I can’t wait for this one.
