There are two recent additions to the Dreamcast library. One is a survival-horror sequel to one of the oldest gaming franchises, while the other is an update and quasi-sequel to one of the most well received Dreamcast titles to date. The first title comes from DarkWorks and Infogrames with the later coming from the geniuses at Sonic Team. That’s right folks, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare and Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2.0 have made their way to everyone’s favorite console.
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
The fourth title in the ever-changing series comes to us courtesy of DarkWorks. In this latest installment, gamers play as a new Edward Carnby who acts as a spiritual successor to the man with the same name from its previous titles. In this adventure, you must go to Shadow Island to unravel the mysterous death of your friend Charles Fisk. But you aren’t alone as a professor of translation, Aline Cedrac, joins you in your voyage. Both characters are playable with his being more action oriented, while her portion focuses more so on puzzles.
The main element of the game has to do with the island itself and its shadows. The focus is in regards as to how light interacts with them as demons lurk in said shadows and have varying degrees of action regarding light – while some will cower in fear, others will lash out with a vengeance. It’s a good thing you have some phosphorous bullets and a shotgun, just be sure to use your flashlight wisely. If this sounds like your kind of adventure, look for it on store shelves with an MSRP of $19.95!
Phantasy Star Online Version 2
The latest foray into online gaming from Sonic Team comes in the form a add-on/semi-sequel in the newest installment to the Phantasy Star Online series. Included are two new levels, more rare items to collect, a new battle mode, a 12 player soccer lobby mini game, and even cool master system mags! You will also be able to bring over your characters from the first game as well, you will want to do this since you can now get up to level 200.
Now, unlike the first, there will be a monthly charge here. While the original will continue to be free to play online, Version 2 will cost $15 every 3 months. While $5 a month isn’t bad, it certainly isn’t as good as free, but that is the price one must pay for such goodness. It can also be played offline (which is how I played much of the first). It has an MSRP of $39.99 and has just hit store shelves.
