Losing spring seasons make for winning regular seasons-or so it has been for the M's in recent years. You have to wonder, though, if the Mariners are ready for opening day.
The Bullpen Should we worry, just a little, about Arthur Rhodes? Being the only left-hander in the bullpen, it's important for him to be ready. Six days before the opener he gave a dismal performance-his era hit 13.50.
Julio Mateo, the lone rookie, offers the best breaking ball to get lefties out and proved to be very consistent during spring training. Kaz is back, feeling good and scheduled to be available for the first game. Injuries The M's get to start their first game of the season in pretty good health. The only one who won't be available opening day is Dan Wilson and he is coming along better than expected. He is scheduled to be back in action on April 5. That's spring for you--the starters are not staying in the whole game; young players, who will not be around on opening day, tend to make mistakes or give up leads. Also, the experienced guys are anxious to get started in the regular season. They are tired of camp and are anxious to head north. The management got to look at a lot of young talent this season--more than any season before. Besides, they finished on a high note by winning their last exhibition game against the Giants.
