5. Bake according to the instructions on the Sculpey package. Use the tin baking dish and make sure that the cutout lies flat on the bottom.

6. Once you remove the Sculpey from the oven, allow it to cool (about 20 minutes), and glue a round magnet to the back with tacky glue. Allow glue to dry till set, about 12 hours.

DIRECTIONS: (Three-dimensional shapes)

1. These are a little more difficult, and require a certain amount of practice and patience. But after a while, you will find yourself smoothing and shaping the clay like an expert artist!

2. Roll and cut out the shape of the object according the directions above for one-dimensional shapes. This will serve as your “foundation.” I will use a pumpkin for demonstration purposes.

3. Imagine your pumpkin has a face. Using the same orange color, roll tiny balls, about 1/2 inch across, and place on the pumpkin’s face in the area of the cheeks. Then, roll two small sausage shaped pieces of orange clay, and place on each side, near the outer edges of the face.

4. Place two more sausages-shaped pieces on the outside of the round balls, near the cheeks.

5. Put two more small, 1/2 inch round balls outside the bottom half of these longer pieces.

6. Place another tiny ball, same size, in the nose region.

7. Roll some clay into a sausage-shape, and then bend into a small rectangle, about 3/4 inch across. Put in the vicinity of the mouth area.

8. Begin smoothing and shaping these pieces, until they blend into the foundation, adding character, depth, and dimension to your pumpkin face. Use shaping tools when needed to round off the mouth, create lips, and define nostrils and nose bridge.

9. Roll out a small amount of black clay, and cut two triangles for eyes, with two matching eyebrows. Press these shapes firmly into place on the face.

10. Roll out a tiny amount of dark brown clay. Trace the cutout of the pumpkin stem, and press into place on top of the orange foundation.

11. Using some white clay, make two one-inch balls, and ten sausage-shapes, roughly 1/2 inch in diameter, with eight ranging in length from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. Cut two pieces in lengths of 1/4 inch.

12. Attach the sausage-shapes, as you would finger appendages, directly to the white clay balls. Place the 1/4 inch pieces where the thumbs would be, and place the remaining eight pieces where the fingers should be. Shape and smooth till they resemble “hands” with the fingertips reaching outward.

My refrigerator is covered with magnets. I hadn't thought of making my own with clay. What a great idea and easy. I'm going to try this and maybe even give some as gifts. ...
