Springtime Herb Planters

I must admit that once the month of February draws to a close, tempting visions of spring start to dance in front of my eyes (even with layers of snow still draping over our trees). I find myself organizing everything in the house, shredding every last bit of scrap paper to be found, chasing after the ever elusive dust bunnies, and purchasing new plastic boxes (the kind with lids) to assist me in my new found fervor. I am tempted to begin gardening, but it’s a bit too cold in my region this time of year to seriously consider planting outdoors.

Since I always use fresh herbs in my home cooked meals, I decided this year to bring a small part of my herb garden indoors. I do not wish to simply dump my delicate tasting greenery into just any old pot and allow it to languish in my kitchen. Instead, I plan to make decorative containers that will serve two purposes: housing and nurturing my tender plants, while looking great in the bay window.

These containers are also a great gift giving idea if you’re attending a house warming in the spring, or if you wish to thank someone in a most unique way.

This project entails a bit of creativity in painting, some basic knowledge of gardening, and that’s about it. You can also employ the help of your children, as perfection is not the key here. My three-year-old had a grand time painting the bottom of the terra cotta pots and dimpling the cream colored paint on the watering can. And I must say, she did a terrific job; so if your little ones want to help, just make sure they wear old clothes and smocks, as the paint gets messy.

Ready, set? Here we go…..

MATERIALS:

Several terracotta pots-as many as you will need to plant a few varieties of herbs. The 5-6 inch size or larger works best for planting.

Several acrylic paints in your favorite springtime colors.

Two to three good paint brushes, make sure one is very thin.

Three or more disposable craft painting sponges (the kind on a stick).

1 medium stenciling brush

1 can acrylic sealer

1 large household sponge that you can cut into several pieces.

1 bunch or bag of raffia
