Winter Wonderland Wreath

Now that Christmas is over and we’re getting ready to pack away the decorations for another year, I find our walls and doors mostly bare and “naked” once the festive holiday colors no longer adorn our home. I feel the need to put something on our exterior den door that would be appropriate for winter, but not too “Christmasy.” And I certainly don’t feel like taking on a gigantic project so soon after the holidays. I want something simple. Our largest project this past holiday season was the birth of our fourth child, a sweet baby girl, at the beginning of December. Time naturally, is going to be of the essence with this project, in between pediatrician/obstetrician visits and nap times.

I find myself tremendously disappointed today, as we were slated to get a huge snowstorm, only someone forgot to tell Mother Nature. Still faced with a dismal backyard full of brownish-pale green grass, I decide to fashion my own “Winter Wonderland” to greet our after-holiday visitors. There’s just something special about a cloudy, snowy day that bathes the ground and streets in a brilliant vision of white. It renews the earth and gives the locale a clean appearance that hides the dull, drab colors of a snow-free winter. All is quiet and peaceful, only the intermittent crunch of tires can be heard, inching cautiously along our country lane out front. Inspired, I begin my quest for the perfect materials.

This project takes about forty-five minutes to complete, maximum (excludes paint drying time). Simple, wintry, and perfect for the busy mom who wants a different twist on decorating her home after the holidays.

Materials:

One 12-inch grapevine wreath

One spool of wire edged sheer white ribbon (a 3-6 yard spool will do)

One can of white spray paint

Several bunches of tiny dried flowers, any type

One bag of Spanish moss

2-4 bags of large clear crystal snowflake beads

1-2 bags of medium clear crystal snowflake beads

1-2 bags of small clear crystal snowflake beads

1 bag of medium round clear crystal beads

1 bag of small diamond or tear shaped clear crystal beads

One spool of craft or florist wire

1 bag of silver tinsel-type pipe cleaners, 7-9 inches long

Wreath Construction:

1. The first thing you need to do is attach clumps of Spanish moss and small bunches of dried flowers to the wreath with craft wire. You don’t want to cover the entire wreath, simply make it appear that the Spanish moss and flowers have been growing out of the vines.
