Medical information abounds on the Internet. Whether you're searching for easily understandable information about a disease or a recent scientific study, you can find it on the Web - if you know where to look.
INTELIHEALTH - AN INTELLIGENT SELECTION OF MEDICAL SEARCH ENGINES AND INFORMATION InteliHealth (http://www.intelihealth.com), a site developed by Johns Hopkins University, combines an intelligent selection of medically-oriented search engines and directories with health information ranging from simple to sophisticated. For example, there's Adult Health Advisor, which provides informative, comprehensible descriptions of the causes, symptoms and treatments for a wide array of illnesses. In U.S. Pharmacopeia Reports, you can look up dosages and side effects of prescription and non-prescription medicines. Also at InteliHealth is Physician Locator, created by the American Medical Association, where you can get information about the background and qualifications of U.S. doctors. Do you want to find out how good a particular food is for you? USDA's Nutrition Database contains information about the nutritional qualities of an exhaustive list of foods. MDX HEALTH DIGEST - A MEDICAL SEARCH ENGINE FOR CONSUMERS Are you looking for information about an ailment from a lay perspective? You can find articles written for both consumers and professionals by searching MDX Health Digest at InteliHealth. MDX Health Digest indexes health articles from nearly 200 publications, ranging from Ladies Home Journal to Psychology Today to Journal of the American Medical Association. Libraries and other organizations access MDX Health Digest on a subscription basis. Web searching at no cost is available only for articles published from 1988-1996. Results include long and informative abstracts (summaries) of articles. MEDLINE - THE PREMIER MEDICAL SEARCH ENGINE To find the latest scientific and clinical information about your subject, you can't do better than MEDLINE. Searchable from InteliHealth, MEDLINE is the most extensive, authoritative database of medical information in the world today. (I'll discuss additional ways to access MEDLINE later in this article.) MEDLINE was developed by the National Library of Medicine over 30 years ago, and indexes articles from 3,900 international medical journals. It's where people in the medical field go to find information. Most of the results in MEDLINE include a fairly lengthy abstract in addition to title, author, source, language, and subject terms. Although some of the abstracts are too technical to be comprehended by non-professionals, many can be understood by educated laypeople.
