Using ZDNet, COMPUTERS.COM, CMPnet and IDG.net To Search For Computer-Related Information
searchable sections for news, reviews of hardware and software, computer company information, website development, games, and an encyclopedia containing definitions of technology terms and concepts. One nice feature is ISPs.com which provides menus enabling you to search for Internet service providers (ISP's) in your area and price range.
Watch out for CMPnet's search system. You have to use the Boolean terms AND and NOT rather than the plus and minus signs to require or exclude words. Search for phrases by putting two words next to each other, rather than by using quotation marks.
IDG.net - SEARCH ENGINE FOR IDG's INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER MAGAZINES
IDG.net (http://www.idg.net) is the search engine for hundreds of IDG Publications' web sites around the world, including PC World, InfoWorld and ComputerWorld. Many of these are trade publications.
Unfortunately, IDG.net is extremely confusing to navigate and search. In my opinion, you're best off searching in Quick Search mode, although this doesn't give you many search options.
Because IDG.net archives publications from many English-speaking countries, you may find it interesting to detect the differences in the way some subjects are handled in different countries. Although there's lots of valuable information at IDG.net, I wouldn't make it my first stop.
THE BEST GENERAL SEARCH ENGINES FOR COMPUTER-RELATED SEARCHES
In my experience, Infoseek produces the most relevant results when searching for computer-related information, and its suggestions for related topics can be useful. Northern Light may also be a good choice. Its Custom Search Folders can be particularly helpful in refining your search.
