Search Engine Reviews and Search Tips: HotBot and What's New Toonature of a web page. In my experience, HotBot's relevance ratings are often off the mark. The problem of spamming (repetitive subject words in descriptions and repetitions of the same site), which plagues every search engine, seems to be particularly evident in HotBot. HotBot's hugeness and powerful search system make it the search engine of choice (along with Alta Vista) for doing detailed searches. You'll benefit by being aware of its shortcomings and quirks so that you can compensate for them or go to another search engine if they interfere with your search. WHAT'S NEW TOO - A GOOD PLACE TO GO FOR CURRENT WEB SITES If you're looking for sites that are new to the Internet, a good place to start your search is What's New Too (http://newtoo.manifest.com/). You can search for sites submitted on the current day or on any date that you select. This can be especially applicable if you've been following a subject on the web and are interested in finding the latest information. How To Search What's New Too Both keyword searching and browsing sites relating to one or more of 17 broad categories are available. What's New Too is one of the few search engines that requires the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT be used for searching. Very simply, enter cats AND dogs instead of +cats +dogs, and cats NOT dogs instead of +cats -dogs. Use cats OR dogs if you want either one or all of your search words to appear in the results. Asterisks for truncation and quotations marks for phrases are not supported. For some reason, (maybe a bug?), the singular form of a noun will not be found if the plural is also in the description (which it usually is). Therefore, it's a good idea to start with plurals as your search words. Results in What's New Too include the exact date of submission, the subject category, the site creator's name, and location (city and country), a short site description, and the URL. The name and location of the website's creator, which is rarely given, can be quite revealing. Words matching your keywords are printed in bold in the results.
