Search Engine Reviews: dowjones.com and CorporateInformation

dowjones.com and CorporateInformation both debuted in 1999, both are business search engines, and both are outstanding. However their aims and the scope of material they cover are quite different.

CorporateInformation is basically a search engine for locating corporate profiles, while dowjones.com encompasses a wide range of business topics. The general searcher as well as the business professional will feel comfortable at both of these search engines.

DOWJONES.COM - A BUSINESS SEARCH ENGINE AND INFORMATIONAL SITE FOR EVERYONE

dowjones.com is a search engine, directory, and information-packed site rolled into one. Items retrieved from most searches can be viewed at no charge. If you choose to search the Dow Jones Publications Library, a small fee is required to view an article (analogous to Northern Light's Special Collection).

Search Services

A search at dowjones.com - by default - accesses Dow Jones business news, press release wires, dowjones.com 2000 (top business web sites), and the Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition (a subscription is required to view these articles).

Search Options: In order to add a general search of the web to the above list, choose Search Options, and select the World Wide Web. You can also opt not to search any number of the other collections.

Unfortunately the search options you select only apply for one search. For this reason and because dowjones.com's search system doesn't offer as many features as the major search engines, I would go elsewhere for web searches.

A menu option located under the main search box offers a search of 250 news and business publications selected from the Dow Jones Publications Library. Each item resulting from this search includes the headline, date, and number of words in the article. However, in order to get the full article, you have to register. More about this later.

Search Tips: You can use quotation marks to enclose phrases and the AND, OR and NOT Boolean commands. These should be capitalized. You can also use parentheses in your search statements [i.e., "pet food" AND (sales OR market)].

Results: Results in dowjones.com are ordered by type of source (e.g. press release wires, websites). Websites appear in order of relevance, and include the title, a description and the url. News items and press releases are shown in order of date and contain the headline and publication date.
