Metasearch Engine Reviews: WebInfoSearch and SavvySearch

© Paula Dragutsky

WebInfoSearch is one of the newest major metasearch engines on the web. SavvySearch is one of the oldest. While these engines have different strengths, both are outstanding and can be used to supplement each other.

WebInfoSearch - FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION

The most striking feature of WebInfoSearch is its ingenious design, which is both easy to use and facilitates the searching process.

The names and logos of search engines accessed by WebInfoSearch are displayed in side-by-side columns that are readily viewable. When you choose the option Search engine (results), the number of items that resulted from a search is displayed under each search engine's logo for quick comparison.

Search engines visited by WebInfoSearch include GoTo, MSN Search, Thunderstone, Northern Light, Alta Vista, Infoseek, HotBot, WebCrawler, Yahoo, Euroseek, Excite, Lycos, MiningCo.com, and Snap.

Results In Format of Original Search Engine

In order to see the results of a search, you have to select a search engine. The engine that you choose is opened in a frame on the top left of the page with your search terms entered and the results displayed in that engine's format. (You can use your browser to expand the frame to its full size.)

If you decide to continue your search, you're basically searching in that engine. To go to another engine, just close the frame, and select another search engine's logo.

Should you want to visit any resulting site, it will also open in the search engine's frame. You can either go to a link at the site, go back to the engine, go to an entirely new site, or close the frame, and you'll still be in WebInfoSearch. This minimizes the amount of times you have to use the back arrow on your browser, and is an enormous time saver.

Useful Links To Additional Search Engines

In addition to the names and logos of the search engines WebInfoSearch accesses, 35 additional links to other search engines, metasearch engines and directories are listed in easy-to-view, side-by-side rows on WebInfoSearch's homepage.

When you select one of these engines it also opens in a frame on the upper left, with your search words already entered. However, in order to get results you have to activate the search icon.

It's amazing how effective these conveniences are in improving the searching process. For example, suppose in researching dog care in the U.S, you decide to look for information about how people care for dogs in other countries. After you've done a metasearch at WebInfoSearch, and looked at some results (including those from Euroseek), you can quickly and easily try the link to Euroferret, WebWombat and Anzwers in the additional search engine group.

Thanks for the update on Savvy Search, Paula.

This resource had dropped out of my leaky brain but I recall being impressed with it some years ago.

I'm off to take a fresh look!

How's things.. ...
